HISTORY
The earliest known settler was Robert Bolmer some time prior to 1713. Martinsville is named after Absalom Martin, who established the Post Office in 1827. The Martin house still stands just east of the bridge over the east branch of Middlebrook on Gilbride Rd. (formerly Martin Lane). His fater Joshua, settled here in about 1786.

Washington's Continental Army established the Middlebrook Encampment here during the early summer of 1777, and used it during the winter of 1778-1779 also.

Martinsville is still an unincorporated village in Bridgewater Township.

See the Martinsville History Page for more.

PARKS
Washington Valley Park
This 686 acre undeveloped wooded area includes mountain biking and hiking trails and a hawk watching area. The western portion next to Vosseller Ave. also has many rock walls some of which may be remnants of the Middle Brook Encampment during the revolution. It is located on the first ridge of the Watchung Mountains between Vosseller Ave. and Newmans Lane, on both sides of Chimney Rock Road. It includes the Washington Valley Hawk Watch (Formally Chimney Rock Hawk Watch), a platform a short walk from a parking area towards the end of Miller Ln. A team has been counting hawks here since 1990 and typically spot from 10 - 20,000 hawks, falcons and eagles in a season. The migration season runs from Sept. through Nov. with the greatest number of birds in the middle of Sept.

There are also several mountain bike and hiking trils in the park accessable from Newmans Ln. Gilbride Rd. and Miller Ln. The Bound Brook/Elizabethtown Reservior will become the focal point of future development.
