Many people think the Tahoe Natiional Forest (TNF) covers the whole Tahoe area and a permit from them is sufficient. Actually there are at least 5 agencies which issue permits: The Tahoe Nataional Forest, ElDorado National Forest, Humboldt Toiyabe Natl Forest, the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit of the U.S. Forest Service (USFS), California State Parks and Nevada State parks
The Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit handles the parts of Tahoe, ElDorado and Humboldt-Toiyabe Natl. Forests in the Tahoe Basin watershed.
