In their AA battery tests ConsumerReports found the Energizer e2 Lithium cost 2-3 times alkalines but lasted 6 times longer for a camera flash battery.
The alkalines all performed about the same.

For gear with a high power drain (Video camera) or for devices you use often, rechargeable, Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH), batteries are much more economical than disposables. (see the battery page in the Home and Garden section)

Nickel oxy-hydroxide similar to alkalines. Better performance in a digital camera, worse in a CD player.
