In an era where the tea party republicans, Sarah Palin, Newt Gingrich, Michelle Bachmann, Rick Perry, Scott Brown, Marco Rubio, Ted Cruz, Mike Huckabee, Rick Santorum, and other right wing elements seem to be getting all the news, the moderate civil Republicans seem to be forgotten. Here is are some of my favorite Republicans: Abraham Lincoln Theodore Roosevelt Dwight Eisenhower Edgar Wayburn - Sierra Club President - Became a Democrat late in life. William Kent - CA Congressman - Independent in later years Earl Warren - CA governor, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court Millicent Fenwick - NJ Congareswoman - Walter Cronkite called her "The conscience of Congress." (Gary Trudeau modeled his Doonesbury cartoon character Lacey Davenport after her) Current and retired Moderate Republicans: John_McCain (before he recruited Palin) Vietnam Veteran, U.S. Senator from Arizona, Supported campaign finance ferorm.. Sandra Day O'Connor - Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens - Supreme Court Justice Colin Powell - General, Chairman of Joint Chiefs, Secretary of State Tom Kean - NJ Governor Michael Bloomberg - Mayor of New York City - Republican (2001-2007), Independent (2007-) Arnold Schwarzenegger - CA Govenor Olympia Snowe - Main Senator Christine Todd Whitman Rockefeller Republicans - Nelson (Vice President under Ford, Governor of NY), David (CEO of Chase Manhattan), founder of Republicans Who Care, that supported moderate Republican candidates. - Michael GersonNote: Wayburn and Kent changed their registration later in their careers.
