Topo (Topographic) maps, originated by the United States Geological Survey (USGS) maps came in several sizes 7.5 min. (1:24,000 - 1" = 0.38 mi. ) (these are more detailed and recommended for hikers) and 15 min. (1:62,500 - 1" = 0.99 mi. & 1:63,360 - 1" - 1mi.)
Other USGS & Bureau of Land Management (BLM) 30 X 60 minute topographic maps maps are available in a 1:100,000 (1" = 1.58 mi.) scale.
Note: minutes refer to the width of the map in minutes of longitude. 7.5 min = 1/8 °
