SUNDAY AFTER DINNER

Expectations and responsibilities.

  1. As Muir and Colby said, we will have succeeded when we have encouraged our trip membersÑnow our friendsÑto act to protect these areas or to promote the broader conservation goals of the Club once they are back home. We should want them first to renew their memberships in the world's pre-eminent conservation organization, and second, to become personally and politically activeÑin ways in which they are comfortableÑin pursuing the conservation goals addressed on your outings.
  2. As the leader, my responsibility is to provide you with a safe and enjoyable trip. What helps make this happen is YOU being flexible and maintaining a spirit of adventure. Our activities are not set in stone, and if changes have to be made to the itinerary, it's important that you go with the flow.
    1. Safety: Walking and trying to sightsee at the same time is not a good idea. Do one or the other. Trails are not well groomed, easy to trip. Sikkim example: "Be Mindful"! Look where you're going!
    2. Health: Diseases can be communicable. Wash hands frequently. Don't share food and drink. To share snacks like trail mix: person receiving holds hands out. Person giving pours trail mix into open hand.
    3. If you get sick or don't feel well, let us know. Blisters are the most common ailment. Pay attention to hot spots when you're walking so we can take care of it before a blister forms. Is there anyone who doesn't know what a hot spot feels like?
    4. We all have First Aid training. I am certified in Wilderness First Aid. Ask assistants.
  3. Each of you has a responsibility to the group.
    1. Being punctual is extremely important. There will be a couple of times when we will be on a very tight schedule and there will be no room for tardiness.
    2. Please communicate if anything is bothering you. Having a problem and not communicating it can affect the whole group. Come to me with problems of ANY kind. If you don't feel comfortable coming to me, speak with [ASSISTANTS]. If I say something confusing, ask me to clarify. Feel free to ask questions of any of us. We may not have all the answers, but we will try to explain the decisions we are making.
    3. Be courteous to others. As they say, it's okay to HAVE a pain but it's not okay to BE a pain.
    4. Be watchful of each other's health and safety
  4. Trail etiquette
    1. Leader/sweep. Sweep carries First Aid kit.
    2. We want to have minimal impact on the ecosystem. Take only photos, leave only footprints. Take abaggie to pack out toilet paper.
    3. If you have to go to the bathroom, drop your pack in the middle of the trail before you go off into the woods. When the sweep sees your pack he or she will know to wait for you.
  5. Driving Logistics
Hand out folders, coffee cups, lunch boxes, medical forms
    1. Update roster
    2. Explain contents of folder
    3. Each evening after dinner we will meet in the living room to go over the next day's activity. Go over Monday's activity.
    4. Sign up for Monday breakfast chores, not dinner, as we will be eating & leaving early for the Petroglyphs.
    5. Bell rings at 7:30 every morning. Time to make lunch. Breakfast served at 8. Let's plan to meet in the living room at 9:00. Because this is the first morning, we'll allow a little leeway. Let's say no later than 9:15, with the intention of being on the road by 9:30.
    6. Have with you in the morning the following: Hiking boots and poles, daypack containing lunch, rain jacket, water, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat, toilet paper & baggie. Put your medical form in a baggie and keep it with you and easily accessible at all times.
  6. Donner party video??
