In Feburary 2010 I called the census bureau out of curiosity because they do not list Taiwanese as an example under either "Other Asian" or "Other Pacific Islander". The guy I talked had no clue; I don't think he even knew where Taiwan was let alone the political issues with China. He seemed to look at some list of standard answers and said to use "Other Asian" and write it in.

Technically most Taiwanese came from China (based on my limited knowledge) whether from Henan Province 1,500 years ago, Fujian Province in 1644 or with Chiang in 1949, but considering the political situation (see Taiwan page) I suspect you might not want to put Chinese under race on the census form. It seems to me the best choice would be either Other Asian or Other Pacific Islander.
