Uses Bluetooth 4.0 LE (Low Energy) With a nominal range of about 30 ft (under ideal situations it can go up to 150 ft [they say]).

Until it's in range, the app will show 'Out of range', but when it connects, a green Find button appears. This causes the tile to play a 90 dB Donkey Kong-style tune.
The green segments around the icon on the app fill up as you get closer to the tile, but there's no indication which direction to go.

It has a feaature called Community Find, and it's a really clever system. Whenever the Tile app is running on anyone's phone or tablet, it logs the location of any other Tiles that it detects.
You will will get a notice with the location on a map when it is detected.

Notes:
The Tile's speaker is on its backside, so you'll have better luck hearing things if that side isn't lying flat against a dresser or some other sound-muffling surface.

Get help:
The app allows you to ask for help by:
- Sending email or text to a friend,
It will send a message asking them to download app.thetileapp.com/community-find
If that person is near your object with the tile it will get picked up by their phone and send the location to the tile server where let you can see the current location.
- Posting on facebook,
It will post a map of the last location with a message on your facebook. - Others - Twitter, ...

Replacing a tile:
The battery will run out after a year and you will have to replace it.
In 2016 it was $12 to replace an original tile.

Tests:
My test results for the original tile:
iPhone 5S
125' line of sight in the back yard.
60' thru 1 wall.
LG G Pad 8.3 70' thru 2 walls
35' thru 3 walls.
50' thru a cement block wall It worked with the keys in my car (jeep with fiberglass top) in the basement garage from the first floor.
Worked from 2nd floor hallway to 1st floor study.
Did not work from 2nd floor bedroom in the middle of my house to 1st floor study at the end.

When connected to a key chain it was about 70'
When by itself it went 250' (a little less than the tile 2)
The tile slim went about 130' in a wallet.
Indoor:
   Tile slim was only slightly less than the tile mate.
