The spelling of the building's name was decided by a previous owner, Melvil Dewey, Inventor of the Dewey Decimal system and founder of the Lake Placid Club, was an advocate of spelling reform (a system of phonetic spelling).

The High Peaks Information Center (HPIC) | ADK just east of the Loj has rentals of cross country skis and snow shoes.
