As of January 15th more than 170,000 people were under evacuation notices.
Total: 27 deaths, 15,500 structures lost, more than $30 billion in insured property destruction.
AccuWeather estimates more than $250 billion in damages and economic loss from LA wildfires.

How the Palisades Fire grew
The Palisades Fire began on Tuesday January 7 and saw two days of rapid growth. By the end of Wednesday had spread to over 17,000 acres (27 square miles). The speed of the fire then slowed, and by Sunday morning it had grown to cover over 23,000 acres (36 square miles.)

3 months of exceptional rain from January to March followed by 8 months of drought gave way to more vegetation, setting the scene for LA wildfires

There are very few trees in Malibu (see pictures below), so I googled how can a fire spread so fast. I all I could find was that there is enough dry grass and low lying shrubs to cause it.

Santa Ana winds with sustained winds up to 40 mph and gusts up to 80 mph made things worse.
On Jan. 7 winds had a north-to-northeast tilt. More winds with northeast-to-east tilt Occurred on Jan 19.

Hundreds of homes in Malibu were also destroyed in the November 2018 Woolsey Fire, 4 times as large in the same area as the Palisades fire.
