I got a free hotdog and $450 discount on a HVAC inspection at home depot.
I suspected a scam when googling the company they showed an address in a park and it said their on-line service was suspended.
I googled best practices for HVAC maintenance, and got a variety of answers.
How often do you get your HVAC “maintained”? | Reddit had a good discussion.
Some comments:
- Morals of the story:
I think that maintenance plans are good for older systems IF you have good technicians. But renewing the plan every year is overkill.
 3-5 years is good.
I had hoped that developing a good relationship with the maintenance company would result in savings later when it came time to replace the heat pumps. Not so. That company was the 2nd lowest bidder, but they missed a critical issue about the existing copper line set. The lowest bidder included a new copper line in his quote.

1 story of a technician wiring a motor backwards and claiming it was broken. The company complained he was new and didn't charge.
- I have my guy come out and check it out every Spring. Having a HVAC pro do preventative maintenance is $ well spent in my book. The other advantage is, it gives you a regular chance to build a relationship so that, when it needs to be replaced, trust is established and they are familiar with your set up

18 years in, zero preventative maintenance from a tech (I do change my filters and clean the coils)
Still working great, even in our recent high temperatures.

- Some issues:
 For example,
HSI's (Hot Surface Ignitor, a modern electronic device in a gas furnace that glows red hot to ignite the gas for heating) should last 3-5 years,
Flame rods will last much longer (if they're cleaned annually)
Capacitors typically last 5+ years in normal conditions.
A faulty capacitor can cause motor damage over time.
