Mai Tai

The Mai Tai, in general, is a famous Tiki cocktail with a history dating back to 1944 when it was created by "Trader Vic" Bergeron .

The Mai Tai is a classic Tiki cocktail. It includes rum, orange liqueur (curacao), lime juice, and orgeat syrup. The name comes from the Tahitian phrase maita'i roa ae, meaning "out of this world--the best." A customer allegedly said this after tasting the drink.
History
1944 origin: Most accounts state Victor "Trader Vic" Bergeron created the drink in 1944 at his Oakland, California, restaurant, Trader Vic's.
Initial recipe: The original Mai Tai was made with a specific, aged Jamaican rum. This rum is no longer widely available. Bergeron started blending different rums to achieve a similar flavor as rum supplies changed.
Hawaii popularization: The drink was introduced to Hawaii in the 1950s. It became a signature drink for tourists at hotels like the Royal Hawaiian. Over time, many variations emerged in Hawaii. These were sweeter and included fruit juices, differing from the original recipe.
