Day 1: Met at Cal Lodge Lodge at 4 p.m. for orientation. Spent the night there at an elevation of 6,960 to get acclimatized.
Day 2: Drove to Prosser Creek, where we practiced setting up tents. Moved to Clair Tappaan Lodge (CTL). Visited local petroglyphs for a talk by a Forest Service Ranger. He also gave us a history of the Lincoln Highway thru the area.
Day 3: Drove to the Negro Canyon trailhead (6,400'). Then backpacked approximately 4 miles on the Donner Lake Trail to Summit lake (7,400') [gross elevation gain 1,160'] where we spent the night.
Day 4: After breakfast, we took a short hike up toward Frog Lake Overlook with views to the south of Sugar Bowl Ski area, Donner Peak and Mount Judah before we hit too much snow at 7,840'. Departed camp; Spent the night at CTL.
Day 5: After breakfast, drove toward Lake Tahoe to the Brockway Summit trailhead (7,200') and backpacked 6+ miles on the Tahoe Rim Trail to Watson lake (7,800'), [gross elevation gain 1,300'] where we spent another night.
Day 6: Layover day. Day hikes, swimming, reading, relaxing. Introductory class on map and compass skills.
Day 7: After breakfast, break camp and backpack back to the trailhead. Return to CTL around 3 p.m. Opportunity to shower before heading home. General Lodge Daily Schedule: (see details by day below) | |
