In 1852 or 3 John Lewelling went back to Iowa to bring his wife and family (including daughter Sarah and her husband Robert King and their oldest child LL King) to California via Panama and ship to SF.
Sarah and Robert settled in the vicinity of Clinton Park (still on E 14th St. in Oakland) and it is lore that the name "Clinton" given to their newborn son came from the association with Clinton Park. They also had a daughter while in California and they named her Elva, possibly a variation of Sarah L. King's mother's name: Elvy Lewelling. They moved back to Iowa to manage a business there. He passed away at thae age of 35 when his oldest child was just 9 and his wife died a year later. The children were raised by their Lewelling grandparents.
