Notes

RFC-1700 is the latest RFC with the listing of port numbers.

In the list, I have tried to be as complete as possible without being verbose and without providing inaccurate data. Necessarily, there will be errors.

It should be noted that the mail addresses that were listed for various protocols have not been entirely accurate. The mail addresses seem to have a 50% return rate...i.e. 50 % of the time they bounce either because the person does not exist any more at that company or the hostname is no longer accurate. The experience of not being able to reach someone via email is not entirely new to me, although it seems to have reached an acute stage. In many of the major protocols, I did not find it appropriate to bother contacting the appropriate reference person, feeling confident enought that I could provide enough pointers myself.

I'm aware that some of the pages are not entirely consistent in format; I'm focusing on putting as many different "protocols" on the list as possible, and so I'm not always as consistent as I'd like to be. Feel free to point these out. I have not yet had the time to go back and look over many of the things that have been written. When I started this project I did not necessarily know what format things should be in - and so part way through, having done many "protocol" pages by hand, I write myself a script.

I'm aware that in some cases, the "protocols" listed, are closely associated with particular applications, and that its is not necessarily appropriate to call them protocols. I've tried to be clear, but in some cases my lack of understanding has muddled the issue. Feel free to correct me. If for some reason someone feels like this is a valueable resource to the internet, I can think of two things that would make it much easier for me to maintain these docs. First, I'm in desperate need of a large screen monitor, and second a fast link. The fast link is not really necessary, but the monitor is really cramping things. After all a 14 inch monitor just about gets a quarter of your average net browser on a screen. Never mind that it has these funny lines across because I'm trying to push it to go faster than it was ever supposed to go.
