There are several things in addition to lights that won't work in a power outage.
Upstairs electric heating, living room kitchen gas heater. wired cordless phones, TV, internet modem-router.
The hot water heater and stove are gas and will work.

We have some backups:

We haven't had any power outages over 24 hrs. in the last 10 years, but we will typically have short outages in the winter.
In the 2024 blizzard power was out from early in the morning until some time in the night.
Heating is electric except for the gas heater between the living room and kitchen, The thermostat requires power for the heater to operate. The heater can also stop if the pilot light blows out. There is a backup thermostat system described in There is a battery backup with USB ports for charging mobile devices on the shelf at the end of the kitchen.

Backup kitchen thermostat:
There are instructions in the gray binder marked "Instruction Manuals" on the shelves at the end of the kitchen with instructions for installing the backup thermostat.
