Election Districts

State Senate and Assembly Legislators:
Four out of 13 state legislators named "Environmental Heros" by the NJ Environmental Federation in July, 2013 are in the Raritan Valley Group's area (Legislative Districts 16, 17, 18, 19, 23). These legislators received scores of 80 or above on their Legislative Scorecard.
They include Senator Kip Bateman (R-16-Somerville, Manville, Millstone, Hillsborough *), Senator Bob Smith (D-17-Franklin, Piscataway, New Brunswick, North Brunswick), Senator Barbara Buono (D-18 Metuchin, Edison, Highland Park, East Brunswick) and Assemblyman Peter Barnes (D-18).
Three other legislators in our area had good environmental records with scores of 65 or higher.
Assemblyman Upendra Chivukula (D-17), Assemblyman Patrick Diegnan (D-18) and Senator Joseph Vitale (D-19 Woodbridge, Perth Amboy, Sayerville).

We endorsed all of the above for the November 2013 election.
In addition we endorsed Marie Cornfield, who is challenging for Assemblywomen in the 16th district, and John Wisniewski and Craig Coughlin in the 19th district. The incumbents all had environmental scores better than the state average of 48.
We also endorsed Gerard "Jerry" Bowers - 23rd District (Bridgewater, Bound Brook, and others) Senate Candidate
and Nancy Pinkin - 18th district Assembly candidate to fill Peter Barnes seat as he runs for Buono's senate seat.

Results: 8 out of 10 candidates we endorsed were elected. Challengers Marie Cornfield (16th district) and Jerry Bowers (23rd district) were defeated by the incumbents.

* Note: Communities listed here are those in the Raritan Valley Group areas (Southern Somerset and Middlesex counties). These districts go across Sierra Club group boundaries. See New Jersey Legislature - Districts by Number for a complete list.
