Don's Home Religion | |
Under Construction I call this a blow because it's my way of letting off steam, my own hot air, and presenting personal opinions on religious issues. It's like a blog without the ability to to respond or open a discussion.
I do not have the time or expertise to defend myself, but feel that I represent the silent majority of Christians who have moderate political views. I'm not a theologian or philosopher. I never understood metaphysics and am too old to try now.
Great Christian religious thinkers like Paul the Apostle (5-67 AD/CE), St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430), Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274), Luther (1483-1546), Calvin (1536), Blaise Pascal (1623-1662), John Locke (1632-1704), Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), Søren Kierkegaard (1813–1855), Karl Barth (1886–1968), C.S. Lewis (1898-1963), Dietrich Bonhoeffer (1906-1945), Bruce Metzger* (1914-2007), Tim Keller (1950-), N.T. Wright (1948-), have spent their lives trying to understand some of these issues and there seems to be no consistent progress. * Metzger was the top New Testament scholar of his day, not a philosopher. I feel he is important because he has spent his life trying to improve english translations of the Bible that would capture the original meaning without trying to impart any particular theological slant. "In matters that are obscure and far beyond our vision, even in such as we may find treated in the Holy Scripture, different interpretations are sometimes possible without prejudice to the faith we have received. In such a case, we should not rush in headlong and so firmly take our stand on one side that, if further progress in the search of truth justly undermines this position, we too fall with it. That would be to battle not for the teaching of Holy Scripture, but for our own, wishing its teaching to conform to ours, whereas we ought to wish ours to conform to that of Sacred Scripture."
