Kearny was known as the "Scots Capital of America".
Thousands of scots lived in the area. The growth in the Scottish population of Kearny
began after world War I, when the Clark Thread Co. and Congoleum-Nairn,
both Scottish owned industries, sponsored large numbers of immigrants
to work in their factories.
In recent years, many of the city's Scots moved to Brick township
and ethnic businesses moved with them.
