U.S. Forest Service reported 571 lightning strikes starting 22 fires overnight Sunday into Monday.
That's probably what the helicopters were doing.

I took my son's jeep into Upper Lola Montez yesterday to see if I could find a
trail between upper and lower; I walked around for 1 1/2 hrs. No luck.
To get there I took a 10 mile Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) road (45 minute drive).
They segregated the lake, North for hikers, South for ATVs.

I found a book that says the route is up the rocks to the northwest of our camp,
not what we tried to find from the topo maps.
The upper lake has great views. See pictures at https://donsnotes.com/tahoe/lola-montez.html

Definitions: Lake - Definition is subjective. It's deeper than a pond and fed by rivers or streams. Size varies from 5 to 20 acres. Alpine lake - Usually a lake above 5,000 ft elevation Glacial lake - a lake with origins in a melted glacier. Flora Lake is probably a glacial lake. The Great Lakes are the largest glacial lakes in the world. See https://donsnotes.com/science/earth/index.html#glossary
Picture Sharing: There are a couple of ways to share pictures. 1. Post them on your favorite photo sharing site, Flickr, Picasa, Snapfish, ... and send me the address e.g. http://www.flickr.com/photos/dtmcbride I'll post the link on our web site. 2. I'm looking at ways (with Matt's help) to use dropbox or google docs/drive. Keep posted. Try to reduce pictures to screen/projector size e.g. 1280x720 or 1024x768 People can ask you for the hi-res version if they want high quality prints. If you don't have software to reduce them just send what you have and I'll reduce them. Emailing to everyone is not recommended because it overloads inboxes
Requirements for completion certificate: 1. Do your trip evaluation at https://tioga.sierraclub.org/TripEval/, Trip #: 12125A Families need to do individual evals. You should have separate numbers; let me know if you have problems and I can lookup your member number. No response is considered bad for us by the committee heads in San Francisco. 2. Final exam - I'm working on it now.
More Outings: Hope some of you are motivated to sign up for a backpack outing at https://www.sierraclub.org/outings/national/ I'll keep you posted on new outings I'm planning, which probably won't get approved until 2014 1. N. California gateway history Truckee to Sutters Fort (Wagons, Trains, Roads, Gold Discovery, ..) 2. Point Reyes hostile & camping.
