Hillside Intermediate School Environmental Education Award

  • Conversion of a 15-20 acre corner of the 120 acre protected Darby Tract, which runs along Van Holten Road in the northwestern section of the township, from passive to active use to replace 4 acres of athletic fields behind the township offices which will be used for a new municipal complex.

    A group of about 25 residents from the Bridgewater Civic Coalition fought the development. The plan was eventually abandoned after professional planners reported two sightings of the barred owl on the parcel. The barred owl has been on the New Jersey State endangered species list since 1979.
